Aligning Leaders

One of the most important capabilities and responsibilities of HR today is making sure Leaders are aligned. It is essential for the success of any business or department that its Leaders all be on the same page and driving towards the same overarching goals.

Sometimes this is a daunting task and is extremely difficult. Not all Leaders are created equally.

The way to manage and execute Leadership Alignments effectively is to work within and with a solid framework.

The framework that works best for me is the following:

  • Assess critical organizational elements and changes that will impact the organization’s ability to reach its goals

  • Analyze elements, areas, and forces that may enable or interfere with the any of the organization’s change efforts

  • Align Leaders and key stakeholders on the strategy, vision, and goals of the organization

  • Develop action plans and change management plans to support each change effort and Leader

The Assessment phase is usually paired with a survey or questionnaire that targets the key areas and strategies that Leaders need to be aligned on and that the business or organization is attempting to drive. This is the time to identify areas of improvement, need, and new initiatives.

The Analyze phase is where the results of the questionnaire, survey, and/or input from Leaders are synthesized and evaluated. It is also the time where organizational forces are analyzed to see how they will enable or stymie the organization in its plans.

The Alignment phase is generally a meeting with all Leaders present. This meeting should be guided and facilitated by the same individuals who conducted the Assessment and Analyze phases. They will present out the findings and begin focusing the group on key areas and streamlining thoughts and opinions. This is generally done by HR. It is best if after the Analyze phase that each leader is individually briefed prior to the group meeting. Just so you are aware and can game plan accordingly.

The Development phase is the last phase. In this phase, Leaders purpose and plan concrete actions that are aligned with the overall goal and the key drivers of the business. Some businesses are more structured than others so the form that this takes varies. But the best utilize a project plan format that has the key actions, dependencies, owners, deadlines, and dates.
